(NOTE:  There are LOADS of rumors about this controversy on the Internet and in various film books.  I met Tom Savini for the first time at the convention mentioned below, and this was his face to face story with me*).   NIGHTMARE's original film poster featured (in LARGE text), "Special Effects Director TOM SAVINI." Tom Savini (FX whiz of classics such as DAWN OF THE DEAD, FRIDAY THE 13TH and CREEPSHOW) DID NOT provide the special effects in NIGHTMARE.  However, according to Savini himself (during a Q&A session at a FANGORIA MAGAZINE CONVENTION in Manhattan*), he DID go down, upon the film crew's request, to be a "consultant" to the gory double-axe murder finale. When his name appeared on the poster for special effects, Savini sued--and won--and the poster was changed.   This very rare picture of Tom Savini giving advice to NIGHTMARE's special effects team appeared in the book SPAGHETTI NIGHTMARES   * The author of this website was in attendance at said convention.  Please visit contact page for more information
